Narrator Interview - Grace Dives
By chance, in 1982, at a particularly low point in her life, Grace Dives came across an advert for volunteer audiobook narrators for Calibre. Now, 40 years and 270 books later and at the age of 88, she is retiring from her much-loved role. Here she explains how volunteering for Calibre has enriched her life and tells of the aspects she will always cherish:
“I often reflect how that chance moment, standing in front of a noticeboard in High Wycombe library, trying to hide my sadness after being unsuccessful in yet another singing audition, was in fact a blessing.
“I may not have been successful in securing a professional singing career, but I quickly discovered that I had the knack for recording audiobooks and that I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. I don’t regard the thousands of hours I have spent recording as giving up my time, but more as a total privilege and a self-indulgence that has allowed me to do what I love most – perform!
“Of all the books I have narrated, my ‘number one’ was a biography of Thomas Hardy. He is without doubt my favourite author. I have also recorded a number of his novels, short stories and poems, so the biography touched me deeply.
“I’ve also really enjoyed children’s stories and I was particularly honoured to record one of my own, written for young listeners - The Dragon who came in from the Cold.
“Over the last 40 years, I’ve lived in four different houses and I’ve become quite good at seeking out the quietest places for my recording. I’ve never had a particular schedule so have always varied how long I read in each session according to my other commitments – and my energy levels!
“What I treasure most about my time with Calibre is the heartfelt thank you letters I have received from members. I have received compliments about the accents I use and many listeners have highlighted that I read at the right pace. I find these letters wonderfully uplifting and very insightful, letting me know in such a friendly manner what works and what doesn’t. I’m deeply flattered that members take the time to write and knowing that it is not always easy for them to do so because of their disability, makes me value their comments even more. I will always keep and cherish these letters.
“I have found my volunteering role to be hugely rewarding. All the staff at Calibre are always helpful, patient and a pleasure to deal with. I have genuinely loved everything about being a volunteer narrator and have learned so much from the wide variety of different books I have recorded. I would certainly encourage other people with good vocal skills to consider putting themselves forward for this task. Bringing a book to life for someone who can’t do it for themselves really gives you a very special glow! There’s no doubt that I will miss recording for Calibre but I will always be grateful for the huge and rewarding part that it has played in my life.”
