Karen, Event Coordinator at Calibre Audio, shares her thoughts on this heartwarming story of an unlikely friendship between grumpy Frank and six-year-old Red.
Frank and Red made me laugh aloud and sob in equal measure - and I couldn’t put it down.
"This heartwarming story of an unlikely friendship between grumpy old Frank, and a lively inquisitive six-year-old boy Red explores numerous themes including grief and loneliness, family struggles, friendship, bullying and the bonds that can grow between generations.
The story centres on Frank, a grieving widower racked with grief after the passing of his wife Marcie, and Red, a lovable six-year-old who becomes his neighbour. Red’s curiosity and infectious spirit slowly break down the differences between the two characters through hilarious encounters, touching moments and a friendship that neither could have expected.
Through their friendship, Frank’s choice of a solitary life and a fear of engaging with the outside world gradually changes, as Red becomes a catalyst to the process of Frank moving through his grief.
There are many lessons to be learned throughout the story and Matt Coyne thoughtfully delivers these with both humour and emotion, capturing light-hearted moments and deeper, more reflective observations on life.
James Kileen provides compelling narration bringing each character to life with warmth and humour. He manages the more emotional parts with care while capturing the fun and humour of the story.
My takeaway from this book is a real belief in empathy and how a friendship can grow in the most unexpected places and at the most unexpected times, and the impact one person can have on our lives.
This is an audiobook I keep reflecting on long after reaching the end and I will miss reading it!"
