Chris's Story

Chris joined Calibre in October 2007, when his sight – which had been deteriorating for several years – suddenly got much worse.

“I’d never really enjoyed reading before. The only books I ever looked at were reference books – I’d either be looking up something to do with gardening or checking a fact about sport.

“As for stories, I just couldn’t get into them. Even when my sight was just about OK to read, I’d struggle to distinguish between characters and then lose track of what was going on.

“Because of that, I was a bit reluctant to try audiobooks at first. My wife suggested I start with some teenage fiction. So, I tried Jean M. Auel’s The Mammoth Hunters. I enjoyed listening and my ‘reading’ skills and confidence grew until eventually I listened to Game of Thrones. I would have been lost trying to tackle that on paper but I really enjoyed the audiobooks.

“I haven’t looked back since – Calibre has converted me!

“Because when a book is made into an audiobook – it becomes more than a book then. The people who record the books are brilliant. They add depth and create characters – they really bring the story alive. For me, it transforms just words into something more like a movie.

“I listen to a book every day now, and I usually have three on the go at once.

“I could never understand how people could read a book more than once. How wrong was I?! Now I’ll request whole series and authors’ back catalogues (such as Stephen King) to listen again.

“But I also love the fact you can always discover something new and different, because Calibre is continually adding new titles to their catalogue.”
